We cooked out under the trees on the edge of a big though somewhat overgrown field. Adrian told us that he used to work here, taking care of a herd of cattle. He would drive them down to water at least once a day. His wife, he said, brought him food every day, over a one hour walk from their house, despite having a house full of young kids.

Remembering that all they had to eat, sometimes, was tortillas and salt, he also spoke with fondness of those quiet days. Our feast was substantial - we cooked cheese into tortillas (quesadillas) right on the fire. Onions and hot peppers were roasted on the fire, and fresh avocado and tomato rounded out the quesadillas. Yum! Adrian got JC to eat a brutally hot pepper, which made him turn red, tear up, and spit it out, much to the ongoing amusement of the Mexicans. Everyone we met for the next few days with Adrian was treated to the story!
